Presario Desktop 4504 CPU Upgrade possible? My son is working with an old computer that has a Pent. 200 in it. I am unemployed and can't afford a new or used one at the moment. Can I upgrade the CPU to maybe a 400Mhz? I have checked online and can't get information regarding this system. Any help please.

Do you know what model of motherboard it has. If so I may be able to help.

If a system was designed to use an Intel Pentium, chances are that the fastest CPU that it can use is a 233-MHz Pentium, since that was the fastest Pentium that Intel produced. AMD, of course, produced Pentium-compatible CPUs (K6, K6-2, K6-3) at speeds of up to 550 MHz, but they're not interchangeable with the Pentium because of voltage differences, as well as possible speed incompatibilites (FSB and multiplier).

The only way that the AMD K6/K6-2/K6-3 CPUs could be used would be to also replace the motherboard with a Super 7 motherboard (available from a number of manufacturers), but most "brand name" systems were not designed to allow their components to be replaced with generic components.

In other words, it sounds as if your options are pretty limited.

Thanks for the replies. I guess trying to use a DVD player in this thing is out of the question. You did mention the AMD processors. First the mainboard is a Sniper with pins top set the CPU voltage from 2.8volts to 3.3v. If that helps at all. Would this board handle the AMD CPU's?

Again, thanks for all your help.

there are add-on cpu upgrade products that cost nearly as much as a "bare-bones" system...

I saw some of them yesterday and forgot the link... but adding memory might be more effective than moving from 200 to 233MHz...

There are options... in both Dallas and Denver, a bunch of places sell off-lease P2-400 PCs for about $200...

Many city goverments offer recycled PCs for a nominal fee... maybe your son could volunteer to work with the recycling program and earn a faster used PC?

Good luck! Although employed, my PC is a P200MMX with 224 MB and a 2.1 GB drive... (was a P133 with 16MB mem and 250 MB disk when I got it) JTB
