Hi

We are considering ditching draytek routers for Avaya IPO SIP installations, due to suspecting them to be at fault for a number of issues we face.

The question is, what do we use instead? We currently use the draytek firewall routers in house and for installs, so don't have a separate firewall, however we have been advised that Juniper firewalls work well with SIP. I don't know if these are a viable/quick solution for IPO installs though, due to the amount of configuration required on them.

What are the quickest/simplesT/most stable and reliable routers/firewalls for IPO SIP?

We are pondering the same thing, what issue do you get? We have found SIP trunks will lose registration/traffic from the provider (no RX at all) and either a reboot of the router and/or the system (not just on IPOs) is required to clear :)

Don't know your budget, but I accidentally ordered a NETGEAR FVS336Gv2, and to my surprise it performed very well.
No trouble with SIP traffic at all. Just remember to turn off the "SIP ALG".
Easy to setup and the price is fairly low.

Kind regards

Gunnar

If you want give me a call and I can demo you the merits of the watchguard over everything else.

Same issues as yours amriddle01. SIP traffic just suddenly stops, with dead air inbound before hanging up. Reboot clears. Have had issues with speech path cutting out intermittently too.

Apparently adding SIP_OPTIONS_PERIOD=1 to the NoUser source tab and a binding refresh of 60 in Network Topology should keep the SIP traffic flowing, but its not made a difference for us so we're exploring other options.

We always use voiceflex, but are considering our options there too....

For ADSL - add a Zyxel P660H

FTTC - BT supplied modem works great

Gunnaro - Larger office, XTM33 or 330 for Rack mount - and XTM25 for Branch / Remote / Small Office

recommend Silver Support and UTM bundle for Web / AV filtering.

We wouldnt touch anything else these days. Been burnt too many times.

Just replaced 5 old (7 year old) watchguards giving 24/7/365 service for that whole time without barely a reboot with some new XTM515 and 330s.

With the managed Access Points now, its a great one stop solution.

So the complete setup would be a Zyxel P660H for routing and a watchguard XTM25 for firewall features for a small office install?

We do install IPO's over FTTC connections so just a BT modem (this is what we use) and a XTM25 in this case?

Yes and Yes

with the ADSL + Zyxel you MUST have more than one IP. Normally you get 5 one for the router and one for the firewall. BT will do it slightly differently where the WAN is dynamic onthe Zyxel, the Router IP is the LAN on the Zyxel (and is the last useable) and the firewall is the first useable. you must turn off NAT, DHCP and the Firewall on the Zyxel. Enable remote management and allow pings. (so you can diagnose broadband issues!)

Easy!

I think it would be better to use a ADSL modem in that case, even though their routers aren't the best the Draytek modems are really good and that is effectively what you are using the Zyxel for in this scenario... or don't the Watchguards do PPPOE?

Taking the firewall out of the equation we can just replace the draytek with the Zyxel for now and it should work better than the draytek?

We have a separate adsl circuit connected to LAN2, which is purely for the voiceflex SIP so not too worried about firewall for our SIP connection

We use the Cisco 8xx range all the time.

BAZINGA!

I'm not insane, my mother had me tested!

What's the cheapest reliable cisco 800 for testing with IPO SIP tlpeter? :)

We use the 88x routers.
It depends if you have ADSL, SDSL or Ethernet :)
We do use SIP without registration (IP authentication) with a dedicated line.

If you want to do VPN - then watchguard is the way forward as well.

I like the 800 series Cisco but they are nothing like the WG.

Always nice to try something new, though the pricing on Watchguard up here is pretty stiff.
(double the price of a Cisco 881)

Kind regards
