precopy starts and starts and starts...

A friends computer had a problem that on start up Windows was set to run "precopy.exe" hundreds of times. So I took the (literally) hundreds of instances of the run command out of the registry. Starts and "seems" ok now, but I don't know what the root cause is, or if this problem will re occur if it is the result of a virus.

Any experiences or ideas?
