ppp dialup configuration, Pls. Help

Am a new user of Linux, I tried to configure ppp dialup to connect to internet:
Device: /dev/ttys0
Flow contol: xon/xoff
Line termination: CR
But when I tried to connect I get the following messages:
-Modem ready
-Initialing connection …
After that nothing happen, and can not dialup.
Anybody know what is wrong in the configuration?

So it is an external modem.
Try on the shell this :
echo ATI > /dev/ttys0
or
echo ATH0 > /dev/ttys0
Any lighs on the modem moving ?
Are you sure u are using the COM1 ?
Give your modem model it will be usefull to help you.
