Greetings:

Since I got my new computer (P4, 1.5ghz, 512ram, 40gig hd), everytime I open an existing PowerPoint2000 file (on Windows 2000) that contains videos, graphics, etc (about 1 meg or more in size) I get a window popping up that says: "PowerPoint found an error it can't correct. You should save presentations, quit, then restart PowerPoint."
Then it prompts me with OK button.

There is nothing wrong with the presentation, since other people can open it, except for me.

Thank you.
mel.

Are the others who can open the file also using the 2000 version of PowerPoint? Do you happen to know if the presentations you are having problems with are being saved in the 4.0 format of PowerPoint rather than 97 or 2000 format? Thank you for your reply Joegz.
It is being saved in PPT2000, and opened by others in that as well.

I was not having this problem, until I got this new computer.
Damn P4 ; )

Thank you.

If the repair routine does nothing to help your situation then this is one of those issues where I would use REGMON and FILEMON to find out what is going on in the background when you try an open the file. If it can't find a file associated with the presentation or PowerPoint FILEMON will tell you. REGMON looks at the registry.

These are free utility tools that you can download from
I wish I had the magic answer for you but unfortunately not this time around. joegz

Thanks y'all.
I'll give those a shot.

I think one time our IT personnel had to go in the registry to tweek something, but he forgot how to do it.

Thanks again.

Please let me know the "registry tweak" Dreamboat.
I worked on it almost all day friday, but no luck.
That'd be a big help.
Thank you.

Actually, if it's just the one file, the regedit won't work. You need to open a blank presentation and Insert-Slides from file into the blank one. You may need to grab the background from it too.

But not to ignore your question, close Powerpoint and just right-click and rename (to OldPowerpoint) the following folder in the registry:

hkey_current_user\software\microsoft\office\9.0\powerpoint dreamboat@nni.com

Greetings Dreamboat:

Still can't fix the problem, even after going into the registry.

Any other suggestions?
Can I email you my registry file? To which address?

Many thanks again.
mel.

No, don't bother with the registry file because we've rebuilt it like it was freshly installed. I'll be happy to take a look at the presentation tho--confidentially.
