powerpoint, publisher replacement programs

Are there a couple of programs that could replace MS PowerPoint and MS Publisher?

Openoffice.org's office suite has a good powerpoint style program and there is a Desktop publishing thingy more along the lines of quark (i think) but i can't remember the name.

All i remember is that it was reviewed in a copy of LinuxFormat magazine.....maybe their website might archive it?
