Powering a CAP/KLM with a port???

So I have aquired a new customer. Their system is an MICS 3.0 s/w. The CAP mod on the reception phone is being powered by a system port. Yes it is...

I have been unable to duplicate this on any other systems. Before this particular 3.0 system, I had never seen it before. I used to think it had to be powered by a SASP. What's the secret?

A CAP mod requires 24vdc. Usually, I run power from the phone closet over another pair to the jack. If you want to know for SURE wheather they're getting power from the station port, replace the basecord from the jack with a single pair basecord.

On the other hand, the newer T7316 caps DO take power from the ext- no additional power supply needed.

I know what you are saying, but I have seen it with my own eyes. The power comes from a port. I know because I had a call back from using that port for another phone. I reconnected the CAP to the port and it started working again. However, under port/DN status, no device is recognized.

It blew my mind too. Hence the post.

I have seen this/done-this-in-a-pinch before. It is 18v and does work, as long as the distance is not too far. This isn't a long term solution, and Nortel would not approve.....

Perhaps I was unclear in my original post. Just to clairfy, The CAP takes an additional port than the one connected to the phone.

I have tried with little (no) success to duplicate this. Is there anything special I would hav to do with the wiring or programing?

it works using another port for the power. (on the 2nd pair) It may a distance issue that makes it not work where you're trying. Either way, you're not imagining things, this can be done. (when I first saw it I thought I was crazy) Personally, I think it's a waste of a port and still better to use the power supply.

I agree it's a waste of a port. I even checked by price and it is cheaper (and easier) to use a SAPS rather than a port.

I tell you what guys I have been installing Norstar's for 12 yrs. and I have never seen that one done before. I tell you what I will remember that one because sometimes you don't always have a pwr supply. Let me also throw this out there you know the cap/kim assignment maybe when you connect to the port for ex. ext. 221 you will need to assign cap to ext.221 cause if you notice when using a 24v you don't have to assign an ext. to a cap for it to work it just comes up. I wonder if you unassign the ext. for the cap/kim will the cap stop working?

Gutwrench : A thought about u not being able to replicate it ; have u tried reversing the polarity of how u connected the port to the 2nd pair of the jack ?? (I know the powersupplies are polarity sensitive)

A KLM will operate whether it's assigned as a CAP or not. Assigning an extension as a CAP allows you to overflow line assignments onto the KLM.

As DigitalMind suggested try reversing polarity as the KLM is polarity sensitive.

Interesting. Thank you all for the input. No time to try today, but I'll monkey around with it (polartity) later this week, to see if I can get the KLM to come up and post findings.
