I was just watching a movie on my comp and bam, the power goes out to my house. Now when I start the comp back up windows kinda loads up with the bar that goes across, then goes to a black screen and thats it. No welcome screen, nothing.

So I restart my comp again and it gives me the choices of safe mode and so on. I choose the last known working config. and windows starts up normally.

My system restore in windows just crashes when I bring it up. So what to do?

FYI : There was no kind of storm and I use a surge protector.

Surge protectors are useless for computers. You need a UPS (Un-interuptable Power Source). They protect against both power surges and low power. "Brownouts" (low power) is the most dangerous to computers. True, a surge protector is good if your power line power transformer shorts out (very rare). More common is a surge caused by line fluxuations (power low and then power high when the line power is restored). Just the refridgerator cycling on can scramble the hard drive. I don't run a computer without a UPS! I have one on my main system, and another on the "test bench". Cost money - sure, but so do my computers. Is your system running OK now? If not, use the Bios reset jumper on the motherboard (after going into Bios and making notes of your current settings, if possible).

I cant agree more with micker377 and there are many rants i have made here on this subject.
I put my money where my mouth is, i have 3 UPS's, 2 for my every-day computer and one for my test bench.
Before i started using UPS's, i lost a mobo, 2 hard drive, expensive matrox vid card, and other cards i cant remember.
Since then (4yrs ago) i have lost one firewire external drive.
So i am satisfied that UPS's are worth twice what you pay for them, and they are cheap these days!
