Hi,

I administer a small office network using windows 2000 server and win 2000 / win 98 clients.

Something has occured which has demoted all user accounts so that they can no longer install sofware or make changes on the win 2000 client machines. After a little investigation it has become apparent that the accounts in question have been demoted from Power Users to Users and the Power User option is no longer visible in Group Policy.

If I check security settings for folders on the server, where it used to list power user as one of the user types it now has a greyed out user picture with the number S-1-5-32-547 next to it. This I beleive is the SID for power users.

Anyone know why this may have happend?

Have never herd of power user groups disappearing before.
Are you sure your logged in localy to the Desktop.
Server Active directory does not have a power user group.
From what I have seen you can only assign power user rights from the desktop machine.
You will need to login as an administrator or be part of the administrators gorup to assign

Thanks for that, I think the problem occured when i installed two new win 2000 clients onto the network. When I logged into one of the new machines i did not set myself as power user locally. When I logged out it must have copied the security setting over my exisitng profile and therefore demoted me when logging into exisiting win 2000 client machines.

One thing that still seems odd is that the folders on the server list user types and there access settings (under security settings). Where it used to say 'power user' is now only has the SID. Is this related?

Kind of..
Before putting server in as DC.. (not allowed to say PDC anymore) you would have a power user group.
