This is going to sound really stupid. A real newbie question. But how do i change the power saving on my shrike box? I know its like acpi.conf or summink in slackware, but what is it on redhat?

lol, i'll be asking how to change the screensaver on my windows box next

You could always try using the 2.4.22-acpi kernel. I believe it should fix your problems. You can find more at this web address:
It has been a while since I last played around with power management as it is pretty useless to me and I never use it anyway. Someone else may be able to help you out more.

k, thanx.

my main problem is i'll b working on it. then i walk off and its not kept alive by the fact that there are active connections to it. So all the remote shells die. Everyone who is connected to it gets kicked off. I never even switched power saving on, i don't know whether its some default thing

Try logging in as root and typing:

/sbin/service apmd stop

and then:

/sbin/chkconfig apmd off

This will turn off power management at that run level and keep it off after the next reboot. If that doesn't work, you could also go into your BIOS and disable all power management features. That will also disable the ability for Linux to use them also.
