I have an option 11 and they are taking power to the building down. what are the steps I need to do to power the switch off. I do know that we should not just let them kill the power and let it go down hard

Safe Shutdown Procedure:

1.Do a System Backup
LD 43
.EDD (hit enter and wait 1 or 2 minutes till it finishes)

2.Meridian Mail Backup
1.At the Main Menu Select option 1 General Administration
2.Select option 2 Volume and Selective Backup
3. Highlight with the spacebar VS1 and VS2 and press F7.
This procedure starts the backup and should not take more
than 30 minutes... well it depends.
4.Select F6 and press twice to exit the menus and return
to main.

3. Meridian Mail Courtesy Down (release 13)
1.At the Main Menu Select option System Status and
Maintenance
2.System Status and hit F10( Courtesy Down)
3.Select F6 and press twice to exit the menus and return
to main. Select F6 to exit the main menu and type
CRTL] to exit the Meridian Mail.

4. Disable DCH
LD 96 stat your DCH (if you have them) then type
.DIS DCH X (x being the number of the DCH) to bring them into a disabled state)

5. LD 60 and DISL X (X disable loop number) your loops to bring them off line.

6.Finally, there are one or two white (or black, or grey) Toggle switches in each cabinet of the 11c for power...just pull them to the off position (I'd suggest start with the last first, then move to the Cabinet 0 or Main Cabinet)

Once this is done, you are shut down....
To turn it back on and reverse the process (turn on the cabinets,
LD96
ENL DCH X (card X)
bring up the Loops
LD 60
ENLL (loop number)
this should also bring up the DCH, but not always... so check it.
This will take at least 10 minutes.

To make sure everything is allright.
Do a LD 60
.stat
you should see this on STATUS IDLE

One more thing!

Make sure tape is out of the external Mer Mail tape drive when you bring it back up.
