Anyone,

I have a Duron 1.2 mhz, 256ram with windows xp professional,cd-rom, cd-rw ,ATI TV Tuner and floppy. It is a kit I put together and its 3 years old. I am having problems powering-on. When the power on button is push the led comes on but the system does not. I have to push the reset button to get the system to power-up. Then I get a window has shut down to protect the system error. I can't tell if its the power supply(rated 250 watts)or the motherboard. Need help

Shut down the system, disconnect the power cord, disconnect the power-on button from the MB terminals, and short these 2 terminals with a screwdriver.
If the system powers up, then replace the power-on button assembly.

If the same problem happens when doing the above, then check the MB capacitors for any bulging, leaking, or rupturing.
If any of the caps look bad, then replace the MB.

If the caps look ok, then make sure all items are fully seated, and securely connected.

If they're ok, then do a barebones setup by installing just the PS, MB, CPU, RAM, video card, monitor, and KB.
If it powers up ok, then replace all other items one at a time until the problem reappears. The last item installed is the cause.

If the barebones setup does not work, then swap out all of the barebones items or have them shop tested to find the bad one.

Certainly sounds like the power supply is the problem.
If you can borrow one just to test and see that would be a way to go.
Or, if you haved or can get hold of a digital or analog multimetre then you can go to techrepublic.com where you will find an excellent tutorial on how to test your power supply. Signup is free and they are a very professional site, like this one here!
Actually, though, before you do anything, follow the wire from the power\on switch to the mobo and disconnect it.
then take a flat screwdriver and place it against the 2 bare wires where the power\on wire was installed. If it fires up then you know the power\on is broken. You cant get a shock doing this and its totally harmless.

No problem, garebo.
I've done the same thing here and in other forums more time than I'd like to admit.

Thanks, Ski. It looked bad as i did it twice in a short while. but i have only done that one other time. I need to refresh when i take the phone or such, looks kinda rude to be saying the same thing as the other person, like they dont count. And im not that kind of person.
Its not good the for the other person either, can be confusing.

Glad you understand i didnt do it on purpose!
thanks

I've "over-posted" also (as you know <grin>), when it happens I just look at the "time-stamp". I just laugh, and realize how many good people are trying to help!

Well, I had a similar problem, at least with the part of it saying there was an error, and shutting down. What had happened was that the 4pin power cord had come out of the back of my secondary HDD and it was still plugged into the IDE. So, in case you haven't already, you may try checking that all of your peripherals are plugged in and such. Sometimes the simplest error can cause the worst problems! Just a little note from experience!

Also, I'm not sure if anyone else mentioned this or not, but you may have mroe on the PSU than it can handle, it being a smaller, 250 watt.

Thanks to all; I changed the power supply to a 350 watts MAD DOG. DO not have the power-up problem anymore. Now it just recycle every once in a while.

What you can do is this. Go to my computer, right click, go to properties\startup and recovery\settings and uncheck
automatically restart.
You may instead now get an error message or an event message that you can see in manage\event viewer.
Also check your startup using run\msconfig and see if there are any progs you can uncheck from startup.
If that fails you have to consider doing an online scan somewhere, trend-micro offers one of the best around and they pick up stuff your antivirus \adaware etc doesnt pick up.
You should also have a full compliment of anti virus\adware\malware progs and run them, updated of course.

I have a new problem now. My Duron 1.2 GHz might have gotten fryed. I kept getting write protect errors when reloading WIN98SE,or WINXP. I diabled the cache memory and the system will now start-up with no errors but it takes forever to load (hours). It seems that some of the cables inside the unit got in the way of the cpu fan. What is the best replacement for the Duron 1.2GHZ? I have a PC266 M810lrm motherboard supporting front-side bus speeds of 200/266MHz

Thats a pc chips board. I still have one of those. Lot of people dont like pc chips boards but i do. I have worked on quite a few of them.
Once you have figured out what kind of cpu you can get for that revision, you can get yourself a cpu for $20 to $40 from one of the forums that have a private for sale section. One such place would be anandtech.com. Just talk to one of the members with a lot of posts. Its pretty easy to get a used cpu real cheap and not get cheated. Like i said, talk to someone with a lot of posts, like over 500 or so. These people will show you the ropes! I use these forums all the time and there are a lot of them, tech-imo is another good one.
Tell them nork sent you. The older guys know me, i havent been on the forums for a while though.
