I am having problems with my Linux machine turning off, when shutting down the computer goes through the shutdown sequence but when it says power off, it restarts.

If anyone could help it is much appreciated, I am not an experienced Linux user so, specific detail of how I could fix this would help a lot.

If any more detail is required then post a reply and I will try to give it.

What command are you using ? Is it
# shutdown -r now ; or
# shutdown -h now ??

It sounds like an auto-power-off utility is failing. Without this, the system would stop with the "power off" when halting. Which distro are you using?

What you need to look into is acpi and/or apm.

Not too sure how it works in redhat, but check to see if there is a reference to it in the bootloader config file (lilo.comf or grub.conf).

I say a reference to using the boot parameter like:

root=/dev/hda5 apm=off

to turn it off - may be worth checking out to see if it does (of course, the root partition will be dependent upon your installation).

That solves the problem of the machine restarting, but it now sits with a message 'power off', is there any way to get the machine to shutdown automatically.

Well, it proves that the interaction between apm and your motherboard is the cause. You're going to have to start digging deeper.

I know the computer does allow the automatic shutdown, because it has done it previously on a windows installation, and I have had different versions of Redhat installed and it did do it then, I think version 7.3.

Thanks for everyone's help I will keep trying to solve the problem.

Hi!

Have you checked that your Computer's Power manager?

I was using an Intel motherboard with Misconfigured options so when I tried to turn off that computer it only restarts.

Due the fact that in the power administrator options it has enabled something like:
"Power failure try last state" or something like that.

Best Regards
Alejandro
