I have been having trouble getting the computer to restart - it shuts down Windows, but not the computer, and I have to reset it. However, when I choose "shutdown", it works ok, shutting down both XP and the machine. I have now installed an Onstream Echo USB30 tape drive, which worked fine in 98SE, but the option to power off when a backup is complete is greyed out. The Help file says that this option is only possible if my computer supports software power-off. Since 98SE did this, how can I make XP do it, too? Thanks for your time.

Probably a power management problem... go to the XP forum and do a search, it has been covered at length there Help us to help you, please post back and tell us if this helped.
