I have a Toshiba Satellite 2800-S202... I have a problem where the power light will not turn off, even after the system itself has shut down... The laptop functions normally other than that... Because of this issue, the battery dies due to the slow drain caused by this lcd light not going out... What could be the problem, and how can I fix it... Do not want to replace the system board... All viable suggestions will be entertained and all help is appreciated...

Thnxs...

Ensure it is actually shuting down & not just going into standby. Check there is nothing in the BIOS that may cause this behavior.
When it has shutdown, remove the battery. leave it out for 30 seconds or so & replace it. Does the light come back on?

I removed the ac adapter from the unit and removed the battery as suggested... It is definitely not going into standby and is powered off... As soon as battery is reinserted, the light comes back on...

Probably a hardware fault then. As it's a laptop there is not much you can do except remove the battery when you are not using it.

I realize that it is a hardware fault, I am actually looking for a specific hardware fault that I can repair myself... I am capable of stripping down the mobo and replacing whatever component is necessary... I just am not sure which component that would be... Would it be the power inverter or what...? I was actually thinking about disabling the power light somehow... this would stop the battery drain... Or, I could just remove the battery after use as suggested...

Any other thoughts...?

See if you can trace the leads from that LED. It is likely either a capacitor or a transistor has gone bad. Trouble is that transistor will be in an IC I expect.

It could be the on/off switch has a problem? Not "quite" disconnecting the power? I think I would look at that first.

Great... that's what I was looking for... I'll check it out and report back...

It could be the that battery has a fault. Not very likely, but if you could get your hands on another to try, it might help.

Thanks... hadn't thought about that one either... not sure if I can locate another battery for this unit, but I'll keep my eyes open for one...

It's always a possibility, may just be a long shot though.

If you have an external monitor, try connecting it to your laptop's video output (either VGA or DVI). If the display on the regular monitor shows correctly, it sounds as though the LCD inverter card or the LCD cable may be at fault (Note: on laptop LCDs there's usually a cable that runs up the back of the LCD and eventually to the laptop's sytemboard).
