pound sign (also known as number sign, hash mark)

all of a sudden it's showing up whenever i type in text (or copy text from another page)...
it's probably something stupid like i accidently chose to view something previously unseen, and if it doesn't print than i'm fine, but i don't want to find out that it means "ignore this whole page" *after* it gets to the printer.
anybody know what it does/means, and how i can make it go away?

o jeez. never mind. it's always so ridiculously obvious once it's obvious.
for anyone else who gets confused about this, it's under type, show/hide hidden characters.
so embarassing.
