I am researching a printing problem we are having with the command 'enscript' which uses the Adobe product Postscript. We are currently running version 1.0 of Postscript. The techs here are saying that there have been no changes with the Printer that would effect printing from the AIX box, but I am not sure. There have been no changes in the programs or scripts using it. After the file is run using enscript and printed, it comes out with this information:

000001 %!PS-Adobe-1.0
000002 %%Creator: xxxx:xxxx
000003 %%Title: xxxxx
000004 %%CreationDate: Mon Apr 15 09:12:25 2002
000005 %%DocumentFonts: Courier Courier-Bold Courier
000006 /NLSvec [
000007 8#241 /exclamdown
000008 8#242 /cent
000009 8#243 /sterling

000018 8#201 /logicalnot
000019 8#255 /hyphen
000020 8#202 /registered
...etc

This goes on for about 3 pages.

In addition, the following messages are showing up in the log file:

025283 enscript: 26 lines were wrapped because of length.
025284 enscript: 58 characters omitted because of incomplete fonts.

At the present time, I have no-one to talk with about the setup of enscript or this problem in general. If someone has some ideas on what files to look for, I surely would appreciate any assistance!

Thanks!

Yes, it prints. But it appears to have all the 'Postscript' formatting information on the printout and in the file. For example, after all the characters that I showed above, the enscript.pro information is printed.

some printers chose to print ASCII not PostScript by default even via lpd - there is the way around on AIX and on those printers by forcing printer to default to postscript or binary documents

For our AIX box, should we change the driver to PS using smit, or is there something else we should be doing? (Sorry, I am really in the dark about this since I am a programmer and not a technician.)

1. Is the AIX print queue defined as a PCL of PS?
2. Is the queu adefined to Auto detect print.
3 Is the printer post script capable, Does it have a postscript card / dimm chip etc. ( what kind of printer is it)
4. Learn something everyday or you wasted a day of your life.

We have changed the printer to default to Postscript and one printout from the application is coming out great. The other isn't and has \025 characters throughout the printed document. Is that possibly from enscript or are there still possible problems with the configuration?

And LHCB
1. I am not sure what a PCL is, so I don't know. [blush]
2. Yes, it appears to be.
3. Yes, it is a HP4100 and has the PS driver installed.

i don't know how good/bad enscript works fine, but AIX has a builtin postscript driver with provisions for tray selection on wide range of HP laser printers
