I am looking for a little general information.

I work in a shop that is currently all MS. We are pretty small - I handle programming and all the DBA stuff. We use SQL Server and MS Access. I constantly fight w/the finance folks because there are products where we are using Access but it is not anywhere robust enough. They don't want to upgrade to SQL Server because of cost.

So now I am investigating other options. I am hoping someone here has had experience setting up a postgresql database on a Linux server that is the back end for Windows clients. Our front ends are written in VB. I see that ODBC is available and I am confident that I can set it up. But I would love to hear from anyone who has actually done this in a production environment.

thanks,
Ron

Hi Ron,

I have written a Visual FoxPro app that is a front-end to a postgres back-end database. The app was written to provide an example of how VFP could be used in a client/server environment. The application is free and includes all source code and the postgres ODBC driver. I have the database used in the example app on my web server, so once you install the example app and setup the ODBC drive you can connect to my postgres server on my RedHat Linux 7.1 box to try it out. The only problem is you will need a copy of VFP 7 to run the app. The app can be downloaded at:

Hello,

I have experience with setting up PostgreSQL on Linux and configuring Microsoft Access to interface with it through ODBC.
