Hi Everyone,

I recently upgraded from ArcServe 11.5Sp3 to r12 and have been experiencing some very troubling problems. The full backup of one of my backup jobs takes a VERY long time to complete. The job is using the Open file agent and a Domino agent, both agents are r12. The backup job degrades to the point that it is backing up at about 10 megabytes a second... which is horrible since that one job is around 1.2 TB.

I can't figure out what could have changed, it didn't do that with r11.5sp3.

Thanks in advance with any ideas.

Sean

Seanka79,

I have a very similar problem after upgrading from R11.5 SP3 to R12.0 SP1. Every time I started a backup it(which always started with the C drive as the first drive to backup) it would take 20 minutes to backup 100MB or less. After the 20 minutes expired, the backup of subsequent drives ran fairly normal although I was experiencing frequent TCP connection failures to the client agents. It got so bad I had to re-install R11.5 SP3. But after doing that I had the same issues with r11.5. I was finally able to get in contact with a CA tech that knew something. It seems the problem is caused by the installation of W2K3 SP2. If the application (in this case R11.5 or R12) is installed prior to W2K3 SP2 being installed, there is no problem with R11 or R12. But if SP2 is installed and then R12 is installed, the problems begin. To resolve the problem, CA had me run the following command on the backup server:

netsh int ip set chimney DISABLED

Once I ran this command, I ran a test backup and the throughput was back to what I expected it to be. I did this on my server that was experiencing problems in R11 after I reinstalled back to R11 (from R12) and on another R12 server that was also having the same slowness problem. In both situations, throughput returned to normal.

Windowsguy,

Thanks for the response! Oddly enough, I ended up splitting up one of our larger backup jobs - the one that was performing slowly and it fixed the issue. I am definitely going to try the netsh issue though... I have racking my brain on this one - its driving me insane!!

I really appreciate you taking the time to respond.

I ran into the same problem and I called CA Support. They had me do one thing. On the server that you are having the bottle neck issue, open up Regedit and change this value HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ComputerAssociates\CA ARCServe Backup\ClientAgent\Parameters\ "MaxSendPacketSize"= from the default to Decimal 48 or HEX 30. Save the key and then restart all the CA services. If you can reboot the server, do that instead.

What this setting does is chop up the packets to a smaller size. This helps speed up the jobs etc.. I also went into the ARCserve backup Agent Admin on the same client server and selected Options -> Configuration and made sure that the
backup priority was set all the way to HIGH. Our full backup runs over the weekend so we set it to HIGH. you may want to test it if you're jobs run into a week day.
