possible virus?

I have a user and all their shortcuts icons have changed to a recycle bin !! You can sort of see part of the old icon underneath (but no, it's not that there's one icon on top of another, I checked that). When I try to change the icon, it changes for a second but then changes back to the recycle bin again. Does anybody know if this is a virus of some sort? the user is using windows 2000 pro. also, if you create a new sortcut the same thin happens.

This sounds like it could be a virus. I reccomend booting in safe mode and then running a full virus scan with an up-to-date scanner.
