I've had a couple of users who have installed SP2 and had nothing but problem with web applications they use. After contacting the software manufacturer and getting "We will not upgrade our software, you must downgrade" from most of them I have come to the conclusion that I need to stop SP2 from installing for a year or two.

Is it possible for users (the ones who could screw up cooking scrambled eggs) to use windows update to get everything BUT xpsp2? Remember, the extent of what they are capable of is clicking a button. If they have to answer questions or make decisions when updating, it's not going to happen.

Also, SUS is not an option until MS sends me server software with licenses free of charge. I don't have a non-DC server to install it on, nor do I have the money to buy one.

SUS SP1 is supported for installation on a domain controller now. Secondly, a quick google will return the following URL with information on how to do exactly what you are looking for. I have not problem helping others, but typically, if the answer resides in the first 2 or 3 google returns, I feel it's my duty to remind people about search engines. Anyway...here's the link.

Oh, you are the KING! stars gahlore for you!

Sorry man, I am just infinatly frustrated with Microsoft at this point. I find it much easier to post a questions here and get a fast response (took about 5 minutes) then to waste half of my day looking for the right way to word a search, especially when my testicles are in a vice being tightened by my users. "Stopping people from installing Windows XP Service Pack 2 from Automatic Update" actually returned a couple of SP2 beta reviews, nothing about stopping people from installing SP2 through autoupdate.

Ok, well, I would seriously consider installing SUS SP1 on your Domain controller so you can manage rollouts and provide notification to your users regarding when a set of patches will hit them.

I used System Restote, went back to a date prior to SP2 being installed .... works great now.
