I can't believe I may be in this position...

If you had to choose between these two jobs, what would you choose?

#1. Large company, well-known. The position is high stress working as 1 of 20 other people who do the same thing you do. Pay is good. You would be trained. Good potential for promotion since the company is large. Many areas of career fields to go into. At least 1/2 hour commute. More like 40-50 minutes. Small fish, big pond.

#2. Smaller company, but owned by fairly big company. The position is 1 of 1 right now, but will grow to more like you. Small office, open environment. People seem nice. No documented procedures, but very flexible environment to work in. Setting the way for future. Some room for advancement, but not as large as other. Good pay. 15-20 minute commute. Big fish, small pond.

Of course, everyone has a difference in opinion as applies to their own personal goals. But I just thought I'd put it up because it would just be interesting to see what everyone has to say...

I think the hour you would say per day in commute times should be considered as well. I personally don't enjoy long commutes.

It depends what you want from a job. For carrer development then larger companies are normally better, yet for personal / skill development then I personally think that SME's are a better choice.
I've worked for a small business (less than 20 staff in total) and for one of the worlds largest IT Consulting companies.

In the SME enviroment there is a much smaller scope for carrer development. If you're the only IT guy, or only IT tech in the company where can you go? Management?
But on the plus side I find it more stimulating and challanging. You learn things on the fly and have a bigger responsibility.

In the bigger, corporate world you're more likly to progress to team leader / supervisor / Manager / Dept Manager etc.
But you don't often get the stimulation and there are more office politics!

Good Luck,

Steve.

I agree with RiverGuy. The commute, if this decision would be mine, would be a key factor in the decision. Right now my commute is about 4 hours round trip. You should consider yourself lucky to find jobs so close to home.

Thanks everyone for your advice.

Got wonderful job offer at the smaller company. I took it. Much better pay, close to home, wonderful opportunities. Wish me luck!!

Good luck. Do they also need a dba to work remotely from Virginia Beach?

Questions about posting. See faq183-874

LOL SQLSister. I don't think so, but if such an offer comes up you'll be first on my list to contact. :)

I would definitely take the one that is closer. Just be hapy that you have two offers to choose from.

For some reason, some people like long commutes. I already figure that I work enough. I don't need to add to it. Life is too precious to waste. I basically vowed never to work more than a half hour away. If I find a job further away, I will move.
