position layer relative to current moused over image

You will need to figure out the position of the image (relative to the view port) and then tweak the "layer" top and left position accordingly.

You might want to consider one of the javascript frameworks (like Prototype) to help do this cross-browser for you (it also has easy-to-use methods to get the position of elements).
