I tried to start Metacreations Poser 4 which I hadn’t used in a while and immediately got a message saying “You are out of memory” “You may need to allocate more memory to Poser” I then got a second box that said there is a problem with Poser.exe and it is being closed.

Then it dropped back to the desktop.

I am using Windows XP, with 512 meg of ram on a Dell 8200 P4 1.8 and the program has been running fine on this computer since I got it about 4 months ago.

After trying to see if the memory was configured, in control panel and setting it to the default. Let Windows handle it setting I tried again same thing.

Next I backed up all my files and removed and reinstalled it. Same thing so then I removed it again and deleted any reference to Poser and Metacreations form the registry.

Reinstalled again, same thing. Nothing that I do seems to get around this problem. If it is a Windows configuration problem it isn’t affecting any of my other programs and I've never had trouble running this program before.

Anyone know what to do?

Any help appreciated.

Mike

The only time I ever got the "Out of memory" box was when I had a memory module going bad. I had two matched 256 sticks and one of them had a bad address. You might want to take them out one at a time and reboot and see if it runs it. 256 is enough to run just about anything out there...even as just a test. Otherwise, take them both out and take them to a comp shop and have them tested, if there is a bad address, they will know within an hour of the beginning of the test.

Thanks for the response, I did find the answer and it is not something that anyone would guess.

The fact was that I had too much memory to run the program, which predated my new computer.

When I installed some game software it tweaked my swap file size and made it larger then 1 gig. The Poser Program just wasn’t configured to handle this.

Reducing the swap file size to 768 Megs solved the problem.

I didn't figure this out on my own; someone on the Poser Forum came up with the answer.

Thanks again.

You can solve this problem by downloading the Poser 4.00 to 4.03 updater from (We bought Poser from Metacreations) and ensuring that your total physical and virtual RAM do not exceed 2GB when added together. If you need further assistance with Poser, please use our online support form available at or by emailing tech@curiouslabs.com. Please be sure to enclose your Poser 4 serial number when contacting Technical Support.
