Is it a good idea to install the ports tree and the src code on a FW gateway? I am a newbie.

Sure just make sure you got your slices well set up
I mean:
/
/tmp
/usr
/home
/var
/etc
All of them should be made difrent slices during install
(slice == OpenBSD jargon for other OS partition)

export CVSROOT=anoncvs@anoncvs.openbsd.org:/cvs && cd /usr && cvs -q get -r OPENBSD_3_4 -P ports

or download the ports.tar.gz from you favorite miror
and tar zxvf in /usr

Anywayz it should be In /usr

And to answer your question yes it's a damned good idea]
If you ever want to get past using it only as FW

Have you tried using the apache with php mysql and ssl on it

I mean it makes a damned good webserver too

Good luck OpenBSDRulez

Thanks, my partition slices are just as you described. I do not have a /etc slice though. I will get the ports and src installed asap
:-D
