How do I find out the services running on different ports of my machine?

More specifically, what is Port 1099 normally used for?

Thanks!

goto and type port 1099 , you will get more links then you care to read

thanks. the references you recommended are very helpful.

but the way, i remember there is a file in WINNT\system32 in which the mapping is specified. but i don't remember what the name is and where exactly it sits.

can you please tell me? thanks again!

and, one more question about Windows. i remember vaguely there is a file which mapps domain names to IP address, used by the OS as DNS. can you tell me the name and location of this file (if there is one)?

I think you are referring to the hosts file

YES! i found these files: hosts, lmhosts, services, networks, protocol...

Does the operating system really use these files when setting up the mapping? would it be safe to modify them?

These files are not really used, as they contain samples, but you can add domain names or computernames to the hosts file, that is sometimes done to 'force' things, no problem.

In general using HOSTS/LMHOSTS are not always best used in a larger networking environment, but sometimes necessary.

I use them to force authenticity to a local BDC and not one 1200 miles away. This allows me to run my logon script...

Hi!
I'm new in the forum and am needing help to open ports 4662 and 4672 for using with eMule. Can you help me? I've made that under w2k and had no problems, but I don't find the way in w98se.
Thanks a lot. Maximus
