Dear All,
I have open port 5700 on a pc using by using the advanced settings of local area connection properties and then the windows firewall. The problem when i run netstat -a it doesnt appear in that list. I have no anti virus install in that pc. So what is the cause the port not appearing? Thanks.

I wish I knew the answer for you but I am as lost as you.

If it works on some machines and not this particular machine it might be worth comparing the specifications of machines where it works and your problem machine. Is the failing machine running XP Professional?

Also you say this is a clean install, what Service Pack level is it, and have you checked the machine before you do any Windows Updates and after you have done them?

I would try a third party NIC, RealTek or 3Com...

for all I know, the onboard NIC may be from nVidia, which are known to have build in firewalls...

Dear Linney,
Actually I have 3 same specification pc from Dell. So my other 2 works fine with my port forwarding settings. But this particular pc it was working well previously but suddenly is not able to open the port. So then at last I decide to reformat the pc thinking it will resolve my problem. Unfortunately after twice reformatting it is still the same? I am using service spec 2 for windows xp which is the original cd provided by dell too. Thanks.

Time to try your luck with another Network Card as suggested by Ben?

Dear Linney,
The funny part why my other 2 pc with the same specification and same network card is working well without any problem. Infact this particular machine was also working well all this while and suddenly is blocking this particular ports. Thanks.

Dear Linney and Ben,
For more added information I just checked all the 3 pc's are using Intel(R) 82562V-2 10/100 network card. Is this card known for any previous problems? So do you I should change the network card? Thanks.

You mentioned a router. Can you verify you aren't able to access port 5700 from another computer on the LAN as well as WAN?

It is probably a reliable type of card, but things do break just through normal use. Sounds like it is an internal card included in the motherboard. It is only a last gasp, head scratching, solution-guess that you attempt a different (standalone) network card and disable the current one.

Dear All,
No I have tried to access 5700,5900,5500 from my other 2 pcs it works well no problem. So that means I am sure my router is not the cause of it. So is just that this pc giving me this problem. So I guess as how linney suggested just disable the current network card. I guess I am gonna have quite some hard time with the dell guys cause they wont be able to provide me an external network card so the worse case scenario is ask them to change my motheboard. But if my network card is not working then I should not be able to access internet right but I am still wondering why it is just not allowing for forwarding but allow intenet to work. Thanks all of you for all your brilliant idea to help solve this mystery.

Ok, in this network of yours, how are the PC's connected?

e.g. do they all run into the router, or is there a switch between them, etc...

if they all run into the router, temporarily switch ports from a working PC with the one that does not function, the same with a switch... and see if the working PC looses VNC functionality, if this is so then that ethernet port that is used is not freed up at all...

Dear Ben,
Ok all my pc are directly connected to a router no switch in between them. So example my working pc is now using 5900 and 5500. So what you want me to do is that the one which is not working is 5700? So if I get you right is that change one of my working one to 5700 and change the non working one to 5900 or 5500 is it? So if still doesnt work what it means is it still my network card or wat ? Thanks.

Dear Ben,
I have tried to swap between the 5500 and 5700. Unfortunately even the original pc with 5500 doesnt work with 5700 or even other ports like 5300 but when I fix back to 5500 it works. So back to the 5700 i put 5500 it still doesnt work too. Another thing I took the 5700 pc on another network it doesnt work also I mean with other type of router. So I am really lost what is this mystery.
