So i'm trying to find out more about port 3389, what it is and the different technolgies that use it in server 2003 and in different packages like windows xp and how it has developed through the different systems, but not having much luck, apart from finding out a few lines here and a few there

Can anyone point me in the direction of a good overview of this?

Thanks

In Windows systems this is the port that is used by RDP and Terminal services. What other information are you after more specifically?

I was just looking for some more detailed stuff about how its used in maintaining a network and such, but info doesn't seem to be too easy to come by

TCP ports them selves aren't used to maintain a network. Port 3389 is the port that a service listens on and you use an application to communicate over that port with the server in question. In this case the port is opened up by the RDP or Terminal Services services. You use the RDP client or Terminal Services client to connect to the port and get access to a virutal console on the machine.

It's a port you should change if you worry about terminal server/remote connection attacks.
