Hi All,

I have a dell 2400 dimension windows xp sp2 and popuppers.com

I have anti virus AVG installed with Ad-Aware.

I have also read a few posts and downloaded HijackThis. Can you take a look and advise if there is anything wrong and how to kill it once and for all?

Thanks

For starters get rid of new dot net, using their uninstall instructions here:
I've encountered it before at work when it was interfering with website functionality; based on previous experience with the uninstaller it should do it's job properly.

Once it's removed, reboot, rescan and repost. In the meantime I'll try and hunt down something useful on popuppers.

Please also read faq760-4897 and faq760-4866. They should assist you in hardening your system and cleaning out the slime.

Assuming you are not familiar with HijackThis, try using the recommended automated scanning and removal tools before resorting to HJT as it's fairly user-unfriendly.

Right, looks like NewDotNet's gone...

Medload.exe may well be a virus, see for information.

Download and run the stinger tool from McAfee here:
Also run one or more of the following online virus scans:
Trend Micro - BitDefender - Panda -
Reboot, rescan and repost please. I'll check back later (either from work or home) and see how you're getting on..

Did as you asked! And as in FAQ760-4866.

I've left deleting medload as it's not appearing up in any virus scan. Should I just take the plunge?

Popuppers is still appearing!!

Okay -

information on medload.exe still sparse, but google searching suggests it's linked to your problem with popups.

My best guess is that you should disable system restore, kill the medload.exe process and use HijackThis to delete the following key:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [loads.exe] C:\WINDOWS\medload.exe
and then find and delete the exe file itself.

Please note that this advice is based on information posted here: and not on personal experience of this particular issue.

HTH - let us know what you did and whether it worked out please.

Right,

I've done as you have suggested, and everthing is still loading, save the popuppers.

Does anyone know the origin of the disease?

I did notice a reference to 180solution (a media marketing company) but not sure if that was a source.

Anyway, after downloading no less than 10 programmes and applying 15 reboots, I am clean. For now anyway, there were some links some where that helps prevent these programmes so I'll look into those.

In the meantime, I can only thank you for all your help.

Nice One!!

180solutions is bad news. We clean it from users' machines frequently. It, among others, will flood you with popups.

Unfortunately, it does take many progs to stay ahead of things. It's best to keep a well-stocked aresenal on hand.
One tool that is a favorite of mine that hasn't been mentioned yet is Bazooka, which can be had here. I like it because it makes you go through the real motions of removal, which I find therapeutic.

It can be found here:
