i'm pretty much a newbie at actionscript but have a pretty good programming background otherwise and i know my way around frames, scenes, and symbols.

what i want to do is associate jpegs with particular buttons. these buttons exist pretty much throuht the flash movie. whenever someone clicks on the button, the associated jpeg pops up. when the user clicks on the jpeg, it should dissppear.

Can anyone point me in the right direction on how to do this?

Assuming you know how to handle buttons, have it make a movie clip (holding your .jpg) visible ( or attach that movie clip from the library...) on a release handler.
Then add another button handler to the clip itself to make it invisible on another release handler, on the clip itself, or use removeMovieClip() on that handler.
