Can somebody please point me the right direction regarding a decent POP3 mail server for RedHat7.3/8?. This is the scenario.

We have an ADSL account with our ISP with 1 POP3 Mailbox. At the moment I have VPOP3 on a Windows server running NT4.0 which dials up periodically to the ISP to collect mail through the gateway on the LAN which is the DSL router. I have Samba running on Redhat 8 as our main file server and I would like to put the LAN mail server over to that same Linux box to free up another machine. (That company directors for you).

Can anybody please recommend a decent POP3 mail server solution for Linux? I've looked into it myself but it looks to me as thought all mail servers require a PPP connection and an MTA like Sendmail running. Would I need both of these or is there a Linux mail server rather like VPOP3 for Windows which I can employ? I've sorted out Samba but I seem to be have problems understanding mail servers on Linux.

Any help is much appreciated. Thank you in advance

I am currently in the same boat. I use Mandrake as my OS. The email server software I use is CommuniGatePro from I have been using it for about 1 1/2 years with no problem at all. You can use it for free until you like it. Its great and easy to configure. If you have any questions feel free to ask. Richard S. McCranie

I am using one linux box as a http proxy and an email server (both SMTP and POP3). The Win98 clients are configured to use the local email server to send and receive email. I use fetchmail running from a cron job every 15 minutes to poll external internet email servers. Fetchmail retrieves any mail and puts it in a local mail box for each local user. Tthe client machines then just pull their mail from the local linux box via pop3. I use Exim for SMTP and qpopper for POP3. Currently "fetching" mail for about 80 email accounts. Works great.

Don't know why it wouldn't also work with Samba running.

Linux comes with an in-built POP3 server, called QPopper.. from Qualcomm... u can start it with as a tcp wrapped service from INETD.. check /etc/inetd.conf...

also, u can download a smarter POP3 server, from Qmail, called Qmail-POP3d.. it supports Maildir, a better mail storage service than the default /var/spool/mail or MBox format..

good luck...

I use webmin too! It's a great interface for administering your Linux box remotely. If I need to login I use a program called SecureCRT. Anyways, I recently setup my webmail server and I was having trouble receiving incoming messages. This is what I did to get everything to work perfectly.

I installed IMap2000 RPM package
Then I installed Postfix RPM package
After this, I logged into my Webmin and went to -> Networking -> Extended Internet Services and started the imap and pop3 services.

Then I went to Servers -> Sendmail Configuration and stopped the sendmail service. Now click on Servers -> Postfix Configuration to setup all my settings and started the postfix service.

My mail server can be accessed via web browser at or it can be setup to send/retrieve messages in Outlook Express using mail.mabaho.com as the incoming and outgoing mail server.

I'm a newbie at Linux :) Been playing around with it for the past two weeks and I love it. I learn something new everyday. Good luck!

Thank you everyone! I think I'm going to give that CommuniGate Pro a try. It looks to me as though it's the closest thing to VPOP3 on Linux. No doubt I'll call on your services again if I get stuck! There's only a certain amount documentation can teach you.

Thanks once again!
