I have a remote user with a pop3 connection who can only send email he connot receive. It just times out after the deafult time (30 seconds)....I moved it higher and still no luck. He connects thru an ISP and then thru VPN this is a outlook client. He can view his email thru web mail but I want it to work with the pop3 connection. It always has until recently. Thanks for the help.

Sending mail is accomplished with SMTP on port 25, where receiving mail uses POP3 on port 110. A total lack of response that would cause a timeout seems to indicate to me that either the server address is wrong (which I would suspect you've checked already) or some type of connectivity problem on that specific port, perhaps due to the VPN or a firewall.

From the user's machine, try using telnet to connect to port 25 on the SMTP server and port 110 on the POP3 server... that will tell you whether there's any network connectivity with the appropriate servers at all.

I can connect 2 the proper ports. I just dont know how to doing anything else after that. when i type in hyper terminal nothing types on the screen so i can't test user names and passwords. Help!

Do you at least receive the welcome message from the SMTP and POP3 servers? I can't specifically address using HyperTerminal because I use the command-line telnet client in Windows 2000/XP. I know that program allows you to enter the commands directly for testing.

Here are some resources for testing POP3 and SMTP connectivity by directly connecting to the server:

Thanks for the info it helped . Turned out to be a couple of emails were 75 MB in size and that was holding up the enitire process. These were about the 5th one in on the list. So I guess it was anthenticating all the time. Told user that was a little 2 big a file 2 be sending. Thanks again.

Heh... guess we sometimes forget in our rush to find complicated answers to simple problems, that it's often PEBSAK (Problem Exists Between Seat And Keyboard)...
