I have an Exchange server 5.5 that has the pop3 and imap protocols enabled. I have created a mailbox on the server and linked it to an NT account, and made sure that the pop3 and imap protocos are also enabled.

Then when I come to configure Outlook Express, I create a mail account and on the Servers tab I enter info as follows:

Incoming Mail (POP3): mail.mydomain.com
Outgoing Mail (SMTP): mail.mydomain.com
Account name : user name created above
Password : password created above

When I try to send and receive mail, I just get the "Please enter your user name and password for the following server" dialog box repeated. When I finally cancel this I get the following error message.

There was a problem logging onto your mail server. Your Password was rejected. Account: 'Test', Server: 'mail.mydomain.com', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR Access denied', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92

The message appears to be saying that there is something wrong with the password, but I know the password is fine. Can someone please point me in the right direction?

Thanx

Gary

Thanx for your response Richard.

As it happens the mailbox name, NT account name and the alias in my example are all the same anyway. Therefore I entered the alias as the username.

Any other ideas?

Thanx again.

Gary

If you are trying to connect to an Exchange server on the LAN, I would try using the IP address rather than the host name. This eliminates any routing problems. I would also try the IMAP connection and see if you get the same problem.

I have tried connecting both on and off the lan using both ip address and dns address.

Incidentally, I have tried this with more than one user and I get the same error each time. Is there somthing that might be wrong in my Exchange configuration rather than in OE?

Maybe there is something else I could use for POP3 access?

Anybody got any more ideas it's driving me mad?

Maybe I am missing something in the above...
but if Exchange SERVER is to control sendind and receiving of email, why are you setting it up in Outlook Express?

It sounds like you are attempting to use Internet Email to send and receive.

We use Outlook (not Outlook Express) for with Exchange.
SMTP (outbound) is set up through Exchange Server.
Inbound SMTP is set up via MX Record pointing
OR
Inbound POP3 is set up with an add on POP3 manager.

On the work station...control panel, mail is linked to the Exchange server. That's it.

If I am missing something, please educate me.

"Getting older sucks."

Try doing this...
domain name/username
password

Example.

User Name: domain1/jdoe
Password: jdoe

Let me know.

what i found out is after setting up the mailbox to have pop3 access, i used the ip address that would go to the exchange server, and for the login name i used:

domain\user name\alias

...and password was their network password.

using Outlook:

start
settings
control panel
mail
add
Microsft Exchange Server
properties
type in the mail server name (COMPUTER NAME) eg MAILSERVER
type in users mailbox eg Fred Blogs
click on check name
ok
ok

using outlook express:

tools
accounts
add
mail
type in email address
enter mail server name in POP3 and SMTP eg MAILSERVER

Pyrowe,

Thanks for the tip.
I had exactly the same problem
as GFAlexander. I could solve it using
your suggestion.
The funny thing is most of the accounts in our server
accept the alias as user name from Outlook Express.
A couple of accounts work only with
user name: domain/username/alias
password: network password

Regards
