POP access is being denied

We have several users behind a firewall, that are accessing their GroupWise mail through the outlook client using POP3. They are accessing their mail over our WAN. They poll the Gwia every minute, and after between 30min to an hour ALL POP access is denied, even to those users outside of the firewall. When I bring the Gwia down, I see several connections from the IP address of the firewall being severed, and after bringing the Gwia back up POP again works, but only for the time frame mentioned above. I had the IP address of the firewall blocked from the mail server, and POP worked for that entire time. So I do know for a fact that it is the connections from the firewall that are causing the problems. Unfortunately I cannot block access to the Gwia for those users, so if anybody knows of why this is happening, or a possible solution I would greatly appreciate it.

Forgot to mention we are running GroupWise 5.5.4ep on Netware 5.1 sp2b
