Would someone be willing to share some experiances on POE versus bricks for VoIP phones? What's the cost of a POE switch versus non POE switch? Special considerations as far as capacity and power consumption? Reliability?

Many thanks!

We just had 13 access points installed in our building, and they are POE. One of the things that the installers said was that there are different voltages used by different POE equipment. Make sure your POE switches put out the current voltage for your equipment. We ended up with bricks (for now) only because many don't connect to the same downlevel switches, and it wasn't cost effective to replace 5 switches just to not have bricks.

Don't do bricks. You'll have to rely on every phone having power near it, which isn't always the case. If you can't afford to upgrade or purchase PoE switches, then buy PoE injectors. Basically you add a powered patch panel in between your non PoE switch and the drops.

For that matter, there are actual powered patch panels that are even managable. We did the price breakdown between 3750 POE and NON-POE, injectors and the powered panel, and the panel came out ahead and you still have the flexibility that you get with POE switches without the power cord nightmare that comes with injectors.

Thanks all. Looks like I'll try to go POE for sure then unless I hita limitation

The only problem I have with Powered Panels to inject the power are the cables..... We had some Cisco 48-port 3550 (obviously non-PoE) and some 24-port Power Injector Panels. We had to install 48 additional cables between every port on the Cisco 3550 and the two Power Injector Panels. The shortest cables we had were half-metre but even then it was painful, especially when we then patched the user ports into the Power Injector Panels.

If you are only trying to power a few phones then it shouldn't be a problem but whole switches and the cabling becomes a nightmare.
