PM7, HP LaserJet 4m and Manual Feed

I can't get PM 7 to remember which printer tray I want for particular files. (It always used to work on the Mac! I'm on Windows 2000Pro on a PC now.) The machine defaults to Automatically Select, but for certain files I want it to be Manual Feed. When I set a file to Manual Feed, everything becomes Manual Feed until I reset it or restart the system. It's driving me nuts, as I need to do normal paper printing in between batches of card certificates, and also when the card runs out it goes onto paper unless I've remembered to reset it. I don't know if this is an HP problem, or a PM one. I've used the 'Done' button - makes no difference.

Hi, PhilKnight,

You could create two printer styles - HP4M Manual and HP4M Auto - and select the appropriate one at printing time.

Thanks for the idea - but... That still means remembering to change the style! On the Mac, the file remembers for me and I don't have to switch anything around. There must be some way - clicking Shift-Print (Done) is supposed to set the defaults for a file but it doesn't seem to do it for the ****** printer!

Have tried using Print Styles - no joy. It selects the right printer (I've got an HP DeskJet 3420 on as well as the LaserJet 4m and use both at once sometimes!) but when on the laser, still defaults to Automatically Select or Auto Select. (Why the two? Don't they mean the same?) It's OK on the Mac - that remembers which tray I want. Can't use the Mac on this job, however, 'cos of fonts. (The Mac is connected to the same LaserJet 4m but not to the 3420 because it's only on OS 8.6. Complicated?) Will be looking for tree to swing from this weekend (and a pile of bananas to eat while doing it).

Do you have the correct PPD installed in PM's PPD folder?

I did an experiment with my (admittedly different) LaserJet 1200PS and using a choice of Printer styles worked fine.

Errr... PPD folder? In Extras there's a Print folder which contains ppd.exe. That's all I can find. By the way, greetings from a Saesneg in another part of Glanau Mersi...

Pagemaker's PPD folder is found under C:\Program Files\Adobe\PageMaker 7.0\RSRC\UKENGLSH\ppd4 (assuming your program files are on the C drive and you use English, which I guess you do). You should have the PPD for the printer on the software provided with it, or you can go here to look for it:

Here's a link to the HP website for the laserjet 4m driver for Win 2K

If this link doesn't work (and it probably won't as I think I am supposed to put it into some sort of HTML tags) then try the previous link at the Adobe Windows Pagemaker support forum FAQs.

The links did work - on these boards they usually come up if they've got http or of which come up in normal conversation!). OK, the Adobe one was giving me drivers for 3.1 up to 98 - I'm on 2000 Pro so I tried the other one. That has downloaded a lot of .dl_ things, an info file that tells me nothing (and a .pm_ for luck). I'm rather more used to doing things like this on a Mac where you just drag it in and select it in the Chooser. Please..... what happens now? (The PPDs already installed are ADIST5, CGENERAL, and GENERAL.)

OK Phil. Your list of PPDs doesn't include the one for your printer, which is why you aren't getting the various options that should be available. I must admit I find the HP website incredibly confusing. Have you a CD with the software for your printer?. It will possibly have the correct PPD on it. It should end with the file extension 'PPD'.

Scousers, here, Scousers there, Scousers every effingwhere?

Yes, as Lyn's explained you need the LasetJet4M PPD in PM's PPD folder, and pointed you to the FAQ: Looking for a printer driver or PPD? Mac or Win?

The file you want is: hp4m_v4.ppd

It needs to be in the folder: [pmdir]\RSRC\UKENGLSH\PPD4

Not a Scouser - a Sandgrounder working in Lerpwl! OK, looked on those sites - downloaded things - read the FAQs - can't find the one you say: hp4m_v4.ppd. Have found HP-LaserJet_4M-ljet4.ppd - no difference. Googled for hp4m_v4.ppd - only references seem to be Mac based. (Wish I was! Life is so much easier on the Mac side of the street.) Probably missing something very obvious somewhere - trying to do about six things at once (with each hand).

Hi, Phil,

I thought you may already have it present on your sytem, but not in PM's PPD folder.

Click here to download the compressed file hplj4_ps_en.exe (525 KB) which contains the HP4 PPD.

Very much thanks for that link - successfully downloaded at last and put in its proper place. Unfortunately... makes no difference! Had bright idea and checked printer driver. Added HP 4m Plus driver (from somewhere in Windows back stores). Printer still working (phe - have to change target printer every time I open an old file, but I can live with that. Still no difference to problem. Can reset default tray in printer properties - but that resets it for every **** thing (of course). Is it just me and this setup or is this a standard Windows thing? I don't think I get it at home (running Windows Me and an old LaserJet 5 something). Will check when I get a minute to spare... Have run out of bananas and branch came off tree...
