Is the avaya robust enough to handle plugging an Avaya digital phone into an Avaya analog port? I had a tech insist that you could damage the Avaya if you plug an Avaya digital phone into an Avaya analog port? I would expect the opposite to be true, given the voltage ranges of analog ports wouldn't it be more likely to damage the phone not the phone system? Analog ports have 96V when ringing but what output can a digital phone put out that could cause an issue on the analog port? This doesn't make any sense to me.

You can do it. But all it is going to give is the 'please wait' message. Also it doesn't do a 96VAC ring. Some systems I have had to use a ring booster to get it to that level.

If this is related to the issue for which you already started a thread don't just start a new thread.

Stuck in a never ending cycle of file copying.

No its not directly related. The other post was about a specific problem having with one extension that I am diagnosing and the issue started well before I plugged into the wrong port.

The Avaya 9508 phone was on port 2-1, when diagnosing the issue I plugged a test 9508 into port 1-2 (wrong) by accident and then moved it to port 2-1 (correct). A technical company is claiming to my customer that when I was diagnosing and plugged the digital phone into the analog port I could severely damage the avaya and thats why its not working now. The issue on the other post happened before I plugged the digital phone into the analog port (and has happened several times since) so I knew it was hogwash but wanted to confirm the digital phone in an analog port wouldnt cause any long lasting issues.

I cant say I have ever seen it cause damage, then again customers tend not to tell me if they have pluged the wrong phone in, just that the port is faulty.

warnings like this are often given as general protection to the maintainer.
In my experience 14xx handsets incorrectly connected to an analog skt show the software revision & an 'A' in the display.
a more common scenario is someone accidentally connecting a network interface (usually a laptop) to a Digital port.
this causes the digital module to enter a reboot cycle until the fault is cleared & I know of at least 1 that failed because of this.
Most people do not do this deliberately but accidental connection is always a possibility.

Do things on the cheap & it will cost you dear

I would expect the Avaya to be robust enough to handle plugging the wrong phone in. Accidently plugging a 9508 into an analog port seems like something that could easily happen a lot and I would totally accept it if the pbx damaged the phone but not the other way around. Although, in my opinion, the PBX and the phone should handle being plugged into the wrong port for analog, digital, and IP phones. In my case it was a simple as mixing up port 1-2 vs 2-1.

Ask the tech/company to provide you with something in writing from Avaya stating that plugging a digital set into an analog port can damage the port.

I did and so far I got a non-comital answer...I cant get them to say yes or no. I was very specific about plugging a 9508 into an analog port and I got a response back about generic shorting of wires, etc... thats not what I asked.
