Hi All,

I'm stumped and wondering if I just have a bad drive now. Here's the setup:

ASUS CUV4X-E motherboard, Award BIOS
PLEXTOR PX-W4012TA
Windows XP Pro SP 1

Symptom:
During POST, the activity light goes on on the CD RW drive
After the BIOS loads, the drive activity light will blink every half second for 4 seconds, then once again (total of 9 blinks), then pause for 3/4 of a second. Like clockwork.

Of course, by the time Windows loads, my mouse cursor shows CD activity almost constantly - very annoying.

Months ago when this first happened, I read a post stating that some spyware was installed by Intuit, running as a service named CDILLA... I disabled that service and the problem went away for a while. I'm not certain exactly when it returned, but now it is present even before Windows loads so I don't think it's a spyware service unless it's written itself into my ROM.

Here's what I've tried:
[ol][li]I reconfigued the jumper settings on it and the CD drive that I had running on IDE 2. I tried making the CD the master and the CD RW the slave, then I tried the reverse. Every time I changed a jumper setting I went back to the BIOS to confirm that the BIOS detected the proper settings.[/li][li]then I tried disconnecting the CD entirely and only running the CD RW as master, then only the CD RW as cable select.[/li][li]Thinking that having the CD RW in the boot sequence might be causing a problem, I next disabled it as a boot device in the bios.[/li][li] Then I began to wonder about the cable. I hooked up the CD RW to the primary IDE along with my Western Digital WD 300BB-00AUA1 drive. Again I experiemented with each being master and slave.[/li][/ol]

No difference in symptoms yet. The CD light is still blinking, the CD activity cursor is still flashing, and it's super annoying.

What else can I try?

Thanks in advance,
Cubop41

I note only in the alternative:

. CloneCD in its newest versions has driver modifications specificly for this drive in its changelog;

. As does Nero 6 in its brand new release.

It might be a driver issue.
