Running Windows XP on newly built P4/1.7GHz, 512MB RAM, with a Plextor 24/10/40 CD-RW drive. Having a hell of a time getting XP to recognize this drive as a writable device. Hardware Wizard will detect drive and install XP-compatible driver. Can read audio CDs & data CDs just fine, but can't Copy to CD from Media Player in Win XP. Either get error that no writable device was found or XP just locks up completely. Installed latest firmware update on drive (v1.02), swapped out IDE cable, and set drive as Secondary Master with no success. Same problem when trying to install and run Roxio Easy CD 5 Platinum with 5.02b update for this drive. Once you insert a blank CD, the program hangs as "Not responding" and locks up XP. Using Verbatim 16x CD-R's. Tried deleting device and adding again, same problem. Went out on Plextor's site but no specific drivers for this drive (Win XP drivers are said to be sufficient).

Help! Any ideas here?

Here is what you need to try. reboot and go into the BIOS. I am not sure what type of BIOS you have but you need to DISABLE UDMA for the Secondary Master and make sure the CDR is the Secondary Master. Many issues with CDRs right now is the fact that many do not support UDMA. So disable it and see if you can burn a CD. James Collins

well as always the bugs of new released windows are as many as the trees in the forest.
I believe that the problem is the stupid and slow as dino roxio recorder program of xp. just try using something like nero 5.1 and above. it works just fine.
