Gang. I have a dc that I need to get demoted. WHen i initiate dcpromo, I get a message that the dsa operation could not be completed because of a dns lookup failure. I'm at my wits end. I stopped and started dns/netlogon service but no change. I've checked the dns records and everything appears to be in order. I read somewhere that a guy deleted everything in the forward lookup zone, ran the ipconfig /registerdns, then stopped and started netlogon and his problem (he had the same error demoting a child domain) cleared. What is going on here?

So are you saying that you actually have this problem with your dns setup? Are you missing stuff like the _msdcs zone? Have you ran a netdiag and seen the results?

I dont know what you heard but what they could be referencing is something along the lines of running a netdiag /fix which will reload the Netlogon.dns file with its attempted fixes and it will attempt to verify the correct GUIDs and such. ipconfig /registerdns will simply attempt to reregister your computer account as an A record in whatever primary dns (AD integrated zone) you are running.

Load the support tools and run at least your netdiag test and might as well check your dcdiag for errors as well although if dns is messed up it will look like crap.

There are ways to demote your DC if you are having other issues that prevent graceful demotion but trying to cleanup the other errors and demote properly would be ideal.
