Hello all,

Please anybody helps me in the following issue:
Problem environment:
Networker 6.2
Networker Module for Exchange 3.1.86
Windows 2000 and Exchange 2000

The backups takes too long trying to backup aprox. 2000 Mailboxes with the saveset MSEXCH:MB

The Exchange2000 Servers are a dual Pentium4 in a cluster environment with 2GB memory each

Thanks you,

MB backups ALWAYS take a long time because the MS API for Exchange is so inefficient. There is nothing you can do about this other than not using MB backups. Legato recommends that you only use MB backups for a very small number of mailboxes, certainly not for 2000.

The number of mailboxes that can be backed up is dependant on the performance capabilities of the exchange server. This is because NetWorker uses the Exchange's backup API (to convert the the mailboxes into pst files before it is then sent to the server for backup). This is then dependant on cpu power, memory, disk space, etc... plus what ever else is running on the server at the time.

A high end computer with multi cpu's and ultra fast disks, and 512 GB memory will certainly be able to process mailboxes faster than a pentium II with 1 Gb memory, etc...

I suggest that you try a performance test and benchmark how long it takes to backup 20 mailboxes. Then use this to approximate how long to backup 40, etc...

Once this is done, then breakup the mailbox backups into smaller groups so that you can stagger the number of mailboxes that you backup at a time.

Look at the NetWorker Module for Exchange admin guide for info on how to do this.

The alternative is to backup only the Information Store, then if you need to recover a mailbox, you will have to recover the IS to a scratch exchange server, then extract the mailbox you need to recover. Look at Legato Technical Bulletins on how to do this. (look at tech bulletins 322-324)

Hello all,

Thanks you very much I will make this test.

Really thanks and Regards to all and Happy new year
