ast's are magic little things that you need when you have symposium and a few other apps, you build an aml(?) and use that as your ast number, that tells the app that link x is your data link for it's intergration. the avail is just the default value used by nortel as the max allowed for your software lic.

An extra explanation to AST and DIP/DTN

If you have a TAPI server connected to your meridian it can give another application information from the meridian.

The TAPI server can "control" resources in the swith and make changes or give status of resources in the pbx to other applications.

IF you need another application to be able to know what status a set has, you must specify what keys on the set that should send information to the TAPI server.

In the TAPI server wants to know if a set is busy or not, it has to know the status of the extension key.
if you set AST 0, (extension is on key 0) it will send information to the TAPI server about what is happening on key 0.

this is often used for callcenter applications.

DIP/DTN
when you should make a call and you press the number you should dial, shoud it be sent as tones or pulses?
DIP=pulses, DTN=tone

DTN is what I should recommend today.
DIP was used before when DTMF tones wasnt supported.

Often you can specify DIP instead of DTN today too, but the calls take longer time to be connected.
So if you have DIP the users has to wait longer for every call they make..

dip can be used if you have a dtmf device that you do not want to dial anything. modems, inbound only fax server..the easiest way i know to block ext to ext dialing
