Please help with edit form code

I have a form that is in veiw only I need to make edit or view. The record source is a query (is this the problem, if so I need away around it). I am trying to find an existing file to view or edit.

The form will only allow views.
I am trying to use the DataMode:=acFormEdit code. I either am using it wrong or it is not working.

I am not sure what it is you want. But on the form properties, there are several setting on the Data tab controlling the permissions of the data source. Check if Allow Edits, Allow Additions etc. are true. If they are, you might want to check the query if it is updateable.... run it from the database window, and it will tell you right away. If there is no space to add a new record, you have found your trouble....
