Hi all,

Sorry if this has been asked before.

I'm trying to get ArcServe 6.5 (Build 620) Single Server Edition on Windows 2000 Server. It installs OK, but database engine won't start (error 1053). However, both Tape and Job engines do start, and they seem to work fine (did some backup and restore operations). Is there any workaround to get AS6.5 to work (other than upgrading to AS2000)?

I went to CA support pages and browsed the list of available patches, but I can't seem to find any that solves the problem. Also I can't find any e-mail address to contact CA about this issue.

Also, I've been browsing this forum and found a thread talking about the same problem happening with ArcServeIT 6.61, and one of the replies seems to point that the problem may be related to the security configuration of W2k (something about 128bits while AS works in 40 ?!?!?). Can someone explain what does mean and how can I change the security configuration of W2K?

Hi There!

In regards to your problem this appears to be the same issue in multiple versions of Arcserve.

Arcserve by default installs as a 40 bit security based installation. However, a number of people are running Windows NT with 128 Bit security encryption, not the standard 40 bit. This tends to cause a problem for some reason with how arcserve accesses some of the system.

The fix (if I remember correctly) was somewhat simple.

Go into your NT Services and find the 3 standard Arcserve services (Job / Tape / Database). Check what parameters are set on these services. You will most likely find that it is set to use the default System Account.

Change this to use a specific Arcserve user account (one that has Admin / Backup Operator privledges) and the corresponding password. Apply the changes, stop and restart the 3 services.

Hopefully this helps - let me know!

Hi,Electro

Thanks for your tip. However, it didn't solve my problem. Our W2K installation is a standard one (no 128-bit security AFAIK). I tried changing the user account for the three ArcServe services, but it didn't help.

I've tried to find a patch that solves this problem at Cheyenne's web site, but I can't find one.

Any ideas?

I'm thinking of using the W2K built-in backup software (NT Backup) instead of ArcServe. I'd like to read any opinion or experience related to NT Backup that you may have.

Thanks in advance

If you are trying to get AS 6.5 working with windows2000 then forget it. It will not work fully and CA would not support you. The first product out to support wiundows2000 is ARCserveIT 6.61 Build=897 or ARCserve2000 7.0. You used to be able to download a free upgrade from the web but as2000 is the current product.

Hi. I was having the same problem of the Database service not starting. I am running ArcServeIT version 6.6x on Windows 2000 Advanced Server. Im glad to say that setting all the ArcServe services to logon as the backup user, everything is working fine. Thanks for your advice :)

To Matthewb:

Thanks for your tip. I tried to do as you suggested (setup Arcserve 6.5 services to start as a backup user), but it didn't work for me. By 'backup user' I mean a user which belongs to the backup users' group. Am I missing something?

Thanks in advance

Hello all.

I have the exact same problem as Dr Mancini. When I try to start ArcServeIT I get the message "Database Engine Won't Start (1053)". This means that no catalogue of tapes is written to Database as backups are done. This then means that you have to do a scan/merge onto a different Server to restore.

I am using ARCServeIT for Windows NT - Advanced Edition Version 6.61 (Build) 834. I have tried it on 2 different Win2K machines. I have also applied an update CD for Windows 2000 from Computer Associates. Still no joy. I tried changing the ArcServe Services Account to Administrator but still no joy.

I am about to give up now and use standard Windows 2000 backup. Anyone else seen this problem?

Any help much appreciated,

Kevin Smith.

I have managed to solve this problem. Hurrah!!!

Basically I uninstalled ArcServe Completely manually.

I did this following instructions from article "How to uninstall ArcserveIT".

I then reinstalled ArcServe 6.61 (Build 834) from CD entitle Workgroup/Advanced Editions for NT.

After this I installed a CD entitle Workgroup/Advanced Edition Windows 2000 Support CD. This worked but the Database Engine would not start.

When asked if I would like to convert the standard ArcServe Database to VLDB I said no. I tried it with a yes answer first but the conversion process crashed. I would imagine this is because the Database Engine wasn't started.

Anyways after the 2000 Support CD was installed the Database Engine started.

Yippeee!!!

Kevin.

p.s. contact me on kevin.smith@goldenpages.ie if you want to discuss this further.

Hello all.

This is further to my last entry re: ArcServeIT for 2000 Advanced Server.

The article (from on how to uninstall Arcserve is at the bottom of this email.

You will need to follow the section "If using ARCserve 6.5 or ARCserveIT 6.6x, remove the following keys:".

Note there is one error in the article. The key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/DiscoveryImplementationList
doesn't exist. The key ImplementationList is in the main Arcserve entry.

Also some of the DLLs won't remove until after the reboot. The main part is the ServicesControl. This stops the services from starting and hence makes it easier to remove the program.

You may also be able to uninstall the program just using the normal uninstall from ArcServe programs menu.

I kept getting an uninstall error when I did this.

Best Regards,

Kevin.

Electro had some good ideas. Arcserve is pretty crappy in that it sometimes doesn't have proper security on the Arcserve directory either. You need to make sure that you give proper permissions in win2K.

Also, Arcserve is terrible with licensing. 1/2 the time there is a problem, you won't get a "license violation", it just won't work. This terrible crapware is riddled with so many rediculous errors and bugs (some apparently intentional) that even their own techs have no clue.

If you can't get the basic services and arcserve directory permissions to work, check the ca_lic directory. Check out all the log files there such as lic89.log, regit.log, etc.

All too often it'll give you a clue that Arcserve is unhappy in how you did the install or an upgrade. The lic98.dll in particular is a disaster.

The stupid gets locked once it's used and you can't re-register or upgrade until you: 1) Rename the file. 2) Actually reboot the server. 3) Copy anothe copy of the same file back into the ca_lic directory.

Arcserve is so pathetic it can't even properly upgrade itself from 6.6 to 2000 I found. I had to perform the steps above to get lic98.dll to free itself so it could be called when I re-registered AS2000. What a total joke, these people are amateurs.

my 3c..

I've been having these errors for quite some time. I've been trying to run 6.61 Advanced Edition on a 2000 Pro machine. I've had several messages throughout with different versions, the one it had settled on with this version was just that the Database Engine couldn't be started.

I have a copy of the Windows 2000 Support CD, and thought it was essential, but whenever I attempt to install it, through installation it claims it couldn't install ASMsgEngine, but then completes installation with no errors. Arcserve still wouln't run though.

There is light at the end of the tunnel however, I have managed to get it to run with no probs. I did as Electro described above, and changed the Database Engine service to use my Admin account on the machine. BUT.. I didn't install the W2K Support CD, it seems the W2K patch stops it working under W2K!! It may be coincidence, so I'm going to experiment a bit more in a minute...

Hi
Build 897 of ARCserveIT is very buggy, so you should all forget it! It has been released just when W2k was out.
