Hi everyone

I have XP Pro SP2 and hope that this is the correct forum - if not, can one of the mods move this to a more appropriate one?

I have RealPlayer 10.5 and a teaching presentation in the format which will play. So far, so good, but I need to slow the presentation to learn what is being taught. I've not been able to find any settings within RealPlayer to do this so wondered if there's any way to access the file from another player (such as Windows Media Player). I tried to open it with various players and came up with errors such as "wrong extension", something mentioning "wrong codec" etc. I assume that I can't just change the extension and I don't know what a codec is. I don't want to chase this any further if there's no way that I can play the clip with anything other than RealPlayer.

Any ideas what I can do to play this with something that will let me go very slowly through the 30 second clip?

Thanks in advance.

What is the filename extension eg lesson.*** ?

It depends on the extension but WMP should play it if you download and install the following:

Codec Installation Packages

Then open the file from Media Player or else associate the extension with media player. (Right Click on file > Open With > WMP) Or to associate within Media Player. Tools > Options > File Types then check the box relating to the extension of your file. After this is done if you double click the file it will open in Media Player.

Daniel.

Hi Daniel

It's a .ram file. I'll try the download that you suggest and will report back with the result.

Thank you.

I've just been lookingt at the download that you suggested. It refers to Windows Media Player 7.1 but the version that I have installed is 10. My "gut" feeling is that version 10 would have everything that 7.1 has following the download that you've suggested. Is this correct or should I still go ahead and download as you recommend?

Sorry if I seem a bit wimpy about this! I did a search on the MS site for <codec windows media player 10> and it gave me nothing.

Thanks again for your time.

Oops - just read the MS page in more detail and this does relate to WMP version 10 - sorry!!!!!

RealAudio (ra, rm, ram)

RealAudio is an audio file that uses “streaming” technology (see below). It supports FM-stereo-quality sound and is the most commonly used format for streaming audio over the Internet. To hear a RealAudio sound file, you need a RealAudio player, which you can download for free from the Internet. RealAudio uses the file extensions .ra, .rm and .ram.
RealVideo (rm, ram)

RealVideo is a streaming technology (see below) that is often used to transmit live video over the Internet. To view a RealVideo file, you require the RealPlayer, which you can download for free from the Internet.

You may well be limited to RealPlayer with this format. If so, investigate RealPlayer further to see if it can do what you wish.

This may help:

Thank you Daniel.

I've been looking into this further myself and fear that I am limited to using RealPlayer to view this file. I'll just have to play it over and over and over, in the hope that I pick up the nuances of what is being taught!
