Is it possible to setup Windows Server 2008 so that I can just search for files? I'd like it to work like it did in all the other versions of Windows. Select C: type a filename and it gives you all the files on the drive by that name. This evidently is not enabled by default. Do I have to enable the search service for this functionality? Seems like a very basic requirement that shouldn't require a service.

If I'm understanding you correctly you want to the old SEARCH back from, say, Windows XP or Windows 98. I don't like the way Vista, 7, or 2008 searches for files so I just grabbed a program such as SearchMyFiles ( This will take you back to the old school way of searching for files which I found more intuitive and less time consuming (ironically).
