Place graphics into InDesign

I am disappointed with the result from placing photoes or drawings from Adobe photoshop or Illustrator into ID. The graphics are always distorted or less colorful. Would anyone give me some tips how to solve this problem?

...third party calibration devices can become expensive, if your serious about purchasing one and feel it is worthy of spending the cash for your projects, then check out this link, gretag macbeth are well known in the printing industry for great calibration tools, the huey device has been well recieved and pretty affordable too:
