I have an image that was created in photoshop and includes text, graphics etc. When I place the file to pagemaker, it not only looks terribly pixelated on the screen it is just as bad when I send it to my post script printer. I have treid saving in in just about every file type I know of (PSD, EPS, TIF, JPG, PDF etc.) with no success. I have used the file > Place command as well as the old copy-paste attempt. The resolution is 300dpi so it should be print quality...but it just is not cooperating...any help would be greatly appreciated!!

(1) the onscreen preview in PM is set to show a low resolution image by dafault. You can change this to a high-rez image by going to File>Preferences. However, this will slow the program down as it has to redraw so much more when you open, scroll or change pages.

(2) what sort of postscript printer are you printing to? Are you SURE it is postscript?

(3) do not use JPG. This compresses the image and you will lose quality no matter what setting you use.

(4) the best sort of image format to use when preparing files to go from Photoshop to PM is a TIF.

(5) in the print menu in PM, after you have chosen your printer, there should be a tab that is headed 'TIFs/images'. Make sure you change it to NORMAL and not leave it at the default 'Optimised'.

Pixeljock- I am not adjusting the size of the image at all after placement.

Eggles-
1- I am not concerned with the onscreen preview resolution just the final product

2- the printer is a xante' platemaker 3 postscript 3

3- thanks, I know that jpg is not good in my line of work (printshop) but I was getting pretty desperate to try anything

4- Thus far the tif image is the second worst looking image Perhaps I ma loosing something when I save as from PSD? I did not use any image compression-Is there anything special I need to do here?

5- Thanks, I was under the impression that optimized was supposed to produce a higher quality than normal. This change however did not appear to have any effect on my printed image.

You did give me another Idea that I had not tried. I printed the same file on my HP deskjet 1220 and the quality looks fine there (as sharp as any image can be from a inkjet printer) so perhaps this narrows down my problem, but I can not print a plate for my press off the deskjet. I also tried a couple different images that were created in photoshop and get the same results pixelated on the postscript and sharp on the deskjet...any more suggestions I could try?

Thanks for your help!

I was sure that #5 would fix it. But perhaps not.

What sort of results do you get when you print the image directly from Photoshop and compare it to the PM image?

(The optimised setting under the images tab on the print menu actually downsamples the image - a stupid default to have in PM).

Have you got the right driver for your ps printer?

Otherwise, the problem sounds as though it resides on the ps printer, not PM.

Well I tried to print the same image out of photoshop and I get the same results as I do out of pagemaker. As far as I know I have the correct driver, It prints images brought in from AI, PDF etc just fine. So I treid to get the photoshop image into one of those programs, but it pixelates there as well. so perhaps it is a photoshop problem not a pm problem?? What do you think?

Sorry, I'm fresh out of ideas on this one.

All I can suggest is that you are using a genuine PS printer, and check the printer rez settings.

I have a VERY old laser printer which is low rez and does exactly what you describe.

Thanks to all, very greatful for all your suggestions!!

maybe youre just copy pasting it. you should try the place command instead

I think he narrowed it down to be a problem with the printer. It prints fin to another printer, and prints the same whether from PS or PM.

I would try different drivers for the printer, maybe even an older driver. Make sure you have the printer settings set to print graphics at higher rez and not in draft mode or something.

When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.
