I am trying to install my PIX 515E at home. I have Charter Cable that provides DHCP. I am not sure if its is bridged or NAT'd.
When I try to setup my PIX outside interface on the cable modem, my network LED keeps flashing. It smells like a broadcast storm to me. I cannot get a lease on my outside interface.

What can I do to read the packets. I guess if I can't get a lease ...... "I can't get a lease". But I am curious to see what the storm is about and would like to complain to Charter just to escalate a ticket. I have switched out cable modems with my neighbor just to see if it was the modem.

What would be some good suggestions to debug/capture these packets?

North, I will post tonight. Thanks for your repsonse.

My setup is this now:

IP<>CABLEMODEM<>WIRELESS MODEM<>PIX<>192.168.1.0/24

I am double natting, possibly triple, on PIX and wireless modem.

78.x.x.x ....... cable modem
|
78.x.x.x<>172.16.1.1 ...... wireless modem
|
172.16.1.2<>192.168.1.1 ....... pix
|
192.168.1.0/24 ........INTERNAL

It works, I can NAT and PAT, but its on the slow side. I cant get the PIX outside to work.

Will post config tonight.

Why don't you leave the NATing up to the existing device and let the PIX just take care of filtering?

Do you have a 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 route on the PIX pointing at 172.16.1.1?

I agree, just have the PIX plugged into the cable modem and then plug the wireless modem up for WiFi (I assume that all its really used for). I have the setup at my house, so once you post some scrubbed configs, should be able to get you up and running. One question though, can your entire internal network network go behind 192.168.1.X/24, or do you need a seperate DMZ network also?

GREENMK: Actually, the WIFI is messed up. I am using it as router, to get the lease from the cable modem and provide a as the outside interface for the PIX. When I try to use the PIX and get DHCP lease from the cable modem, I just get a broadcast storm and no lease....... it times out.

I use this command to get a lease:
ip address outside dhcp setroute

(the dhcp for oustide is not in config below)
