I am having some problems with one of our PIX firewalls and cant pinpoint the issue.

Very randonmly the pix will become unresponsive, what I mean by unresponsive is that it you cant access it from PDM/TELNET and of course PING it.

When I go look at the pix it has all lights on and looks fully functinal. I have to turn off and then turn it back on for it to work again. Anybody ever seen this before?

Well I have been the admin about 3 years there. It is probably about 5 years old maybe.

I have a spare 506, I may just have to build the spare like the 506E, we are not using it for the SITE TO SITE anymore on the 506e just PPTP so the 506 wont be a problem if I switch.

I just want to see if it really is bad or if it cold be possible something else.

Did your pix get really unresponsive very random? Did you config the new pix the exact same way, meaning same exeat config?

it was very random and always seemed to happen when i wanted to do something. i had another pix on stanby with the exact config so there was limitied downtime.

Thanks, I think it is probably time to switch it. I might also double check a few more things but I think it is just getting bad. Thanks again.

If you plug into the console port do you see anything? Is the console port unresponsive as well?

baddos, That I didnt try. What sort of things would I be looking for? I am pretty sure though that wont work once I try to connect through the terminal to check the concole out, but I havent tried it.

Well you could find out that the box is functioning fine, but that there is an ip address conflict or something like that.

Maybe you could see an error message saying it's overheating, or something along those lines. I would definately test it out.
